The Mission — character stories
One source only: 1_SOURCE/source_v2_2026-10-16_ends-mid-ConnorsView-Forsaken/The_Mission_manuscript_v2.txt (58,122 words, sha256 5cae6695…). The old bible, the canon register and earlier runs were not read.
How to read this. Every fact carries its place in the book: P1·Ch1 = Part One, Chapter 1; CV·At War = "Connor's View", the section "At War, 2004". Quotes are verbatim. (inference) means the text does not say it outright; I put it together from several places. ⚠ marks a contradiction inside the text. ? marks something the text does not say. I have not fixed or filled in either: those are your calls.¶ 1
The world in brief (what you need to follow the stories)
- Two layers. People (the police station, Connor's casino, Sergio's past) and living office supplies that hide from people.¶ 2
- The law of the stationery. An object must have a job or it gets eaten by The Trash Can or The Shredder. Talking to humans is forbidden: "They can't know we are alive or else we'll all be thrown away!" (Roomba,
P1·Ch1). When a human is near, an object freezes and "vaporizes" its human features: eyes, arms, legs, hair (P1·Ch3,P3·Ch2).¶ 1 - The box. The binderclips lay in a box marked "2000's deal! A whole box of binderclips and two pencils for only $1.99!" for 26 years ("26 to be exact", Quinn,
P1·Ch3). They were put away when Commander Frederick was about 40 and Inspector Connoly was 24 (P1·Ch2).¶ 2 - Place. The city is not named. There is a Green Line, stations called Riverside and Washington Square, a Trader Joe's, a CVS, and a yellow brick church with a stained-glass Jesus (
P2·Ch1,P4·Ch2). Sergio works "in New England" (P2·Ch1).¶ 3 - Timeline of the main events (inference). Saturday: Sergio finds the binderclips on his desk, Arabella, the casino. Saturday night into Sunday: captivity and escape. Sunday: he is fired, Chaya's call ("Sunday–call day",
P4·Ch2). The next morning, before dawn: the break-in at Ryan's office (P4·Ch3). Then prison (CV·In Prison). ⚠ InP1·Ch2Sunny says "But it's Sunday…?" while the action is on Saturday.¶ 2
Main characters
Sergio Garcia
Who. A police sergeant, very young. He studied robotic engineering at Oxford and dropped out to find The Bandit, the man who ordered his parents' kidnapping (P2·Ch1, P4·Ch2).¶ 2
What he looks like (per the text).
- Tall and "lanky", looks "just over eighteen, twenty at best" (
P1·Ch1). Slender hands (P1·Ch1).¶ 1 - Naturally dark hair with amber highlights, always tousled to the point where it "basically stuck up straight". He dyed it ("before he'd dyed his hair",
P2·Ch1). Green eyes, like his father's, and like his mother's in the dream (P1·Ch1,P2·Ch1). A pierced eyebrow (P2·Ch1).¶ 2 - A silver oval locket with his mother's photo around his neck (
P2·Ch1).¶ 2 - Off duty: his mother's enormous black zip-up sweatshirt, which she gave him "that dreadful night they were taken away". Under it a white tank top; tree-camo pants splattered with paint; white Nikes or torn black Converse (
P2·Ch1–Ch3). On duty: a "fitted uniform tux" top with badge and name tag "Sergio Garcia" over navy-blue sweatpants (P1·Ch1).¶ 5 - A skateboard covered in stickers (sports teams, a Mexican flag, Oxford), a helmet, AirPods, a navy-blue backpack (
P2·Ch1).¶ 1 - A revolver with a polished red-wood handle engraved "For Sergio Garcia ~ Superintendent Smith" (
P2·Ch1). Industrial scissors and a screwdriver in his pockets, a habit from college (P3·Ch3,P4·Ch1).¶ 1 - Home: a studio on the 6th floor ("two rooms and a bathroom"). A loft bed, beige walls, an L-shaped brown leather couch, an arc floor lamp with a linen shade, a desk buried in printouts about The Bandit (
P2·Ch1).¶ 1
His story, in order.
- Childhood. His parents are Ana and Pablo Garcia. At 5, in a dark alley, men in black hold a knife to his throat. His parents give themselves up to save him: "Hand yourself over or see your son die, The Bandit's orders". They are taken away in a van (
P4·Ch2, dream-memory). Inspector Vance questions him through a Spanish interpreter (P4·Ch3). Lady Bukshonburg takes him to the orphanage, where he eats bland soup for weeks (P4·Ch2).¶ 1 - With the Lukshays. At 6 he is adopted by the wealthy Lukshays in California, after "the plane ride from Mexico" (
P2·Ch2). At first they show him off at dinners like a trophy; then come punishments in the attic, no food, his books taken away. His foster sister Arabella blames everything she does on him (P2·Ch1–Ch2). He isn't allowed to play soccer, "too many bones"; he has to fight to go to Oxford, though he got in on a scholarship (P4·Ch2).¶ 2 - Oxford. The first place he is happy: machines, friends, his girlfriend Chaya (
P4·Ch2). He hears the name The Bandit and drops everything: studies, sleep, food (P2·Ch1). Smith "plucked Sergio out of a classroom" (P2·Ch1). Sergio fakes an emergency in New England, because Smith's files say The Bandit was sighted in Springfield. Later he confesses, and Smith just laughs (P4·Ch2).¶ 1 - The station. He hunts for The Bandit until 2–4 am every night (
P2·Ch1). The Connor Maguire case: a report due Friday (P1·Ch2). He eavesdrops on Connor's interrogation and dictates notes to Siri (P1·Ch1). He carries off the box of binderclips (P1·Ch1).¶ 3 - Saturday (
P2·Ch1–Ch3). A nightmare: his mother, his father and Mr. Lukshay tell him "Find him". Arabella turns up asking for money. From her "Connor Maguire Services" cup he works out where the illegal casino is and talks his way into going with her. He falls off his skateboard, is nearly hit by a taxi, goes to the station and finds his desk wrecked. He rides with Arabella to Riverside. The laundromat; a closet that turns out to be a Faraday cage; a way in through a broken dryer; a spiral staircase down. In the casino he meets Kwame and calls himself "Seph". He follows Connor into the old mansion, finds the bookshelf door and overhears: Connor is not the one knocking people out, he is being blackmailed; the "market" is set for December 15th "in the den". He is hit over the head.¶ 7 - Captivity (
P3, through the binderclips' eyes). Grecs pours "concentrated whisky" into him and cuffs him. Sergio comes to and sees that the binderclips are alive. The deal: they free him, he gives them "a real job in the police station" and lets Ruth go. Sunny opens the lock (P3·Ch3).¶ 2 - Escape (
P4·Ch1). He hears Arabella defend him to Otto, and Otto hits her. Sergio knocks Otto out; then a chase, a fight, a run through the "den" and capture. Through the gap under a door he hears a man in red socks: the next target is "Anne-Marie Kellington. She lives on Maple Street". Tied to a chair, with the binderclips' help he trips the guard Derek, hits Andrew with a chair and escapes with Arabella through the vents.¶ 1 - Sunday (
P4·Ch2). On the train he runs into Valerie Aurelio. At the station he tries to clear the arrested Connor and shows Ryan the binderclips. They don't move. Ryan: "You're fired until you can sort out your priorities!" The same day Chaya breaks up with him on a video call. That night he dreams of the kidnapping. He tells Sunny his whole life, and Quinn comes up with the idea of the station's database.¶ 1 - The break-in (
P4·Ch3). At 4 am Sergio gets into Ryan's office. He finds the articles on Igor Gondalaz and "Missing Governor", remembers Vance and concludes: "I think Igor was working with The Bandit". The twins fight, Maya knocks over a glass, Ryan walks in with his gun drawn. Sergio deliberately drops Ryan's papers into the shredder.¶ 2 - Prison (
CV·In Prison). He ends up in a cell with Connor, in an orange jumpsuit, and bargains with him for the truth about Igor. Connor begins to tell his story.¶ 2
What he wants (per the text). To find his parents ("I know you're alive!") and get revenge on The Bandit (P2·Ch1). He wants recognition and is angry at himself for it: "he wanted the credit and hated himself for it" (P2·Ch1). He misses machines and Oxford. What he fears. That he failed his parents ("You failed us"), and that he is going mad (P2·Ch1, P3·Ch3). Habits. Fiddles with the drawstrings of his mother's sweatshirt. Ruffles his hair. Plays a TV reporter on his own with the revolver (P2·Ch1).¶ 3
⚠ Contradictions and ? gaps
- ⚠ Age: "just over eighteen, twenty at best" and "barely twenty" (
P1), "twenty year old" (P2·Ch3), "Twenty-one year old Sergio" (P4·Ch2), "If Sergio is twenty-one" (P4·Ch3). And "thirteen years later" after first grade (P4·Ch1).¶ 6 - ⚠ The locket is silver (
P2·Ch1), but inP3·Ch2"a thin golden object" flies from his neck.¶ 1 - ⚠ Weapon: a revolver everywhere, but once "the handle of his rifle" (
P2·Ch1).¶ 1 - ⚠ Origins: "a mix of Portuguese and Spanish" (
P4·Ch1). His father speaks Portuguese in the dream; Sergio flew to the Lukshays from Mexico; there's a Mexican flag on his skateboard; he spoke Spanish with Vance; his parents were taken in California. ? Where he was born, the text doesn't say.¶ 1 - ⚠ Rank: a sergeant on probation, but Smith was "setting him up to be a General" (
P4·Ch2).¶ 1 - ⚠ His father's eyes: green (
P2·Ch1, dream), "amber" (P4·Ch1).¶ 2 - ? Odd things in the apartment: a year-old pack of mint gum nobody opened, and a jar of peanut butter that "wasn't there" (
P2·Ch1–Ch2). The thread is open.¶ 2
Connor Maguire (Connor Waylon Maguire)
Who. Owner of the illegal casino, "King of the Castle". An Iraq veteran. Full name on the form: "Connor Waylon Maguire" (CV·Betrayal).¶ 3
What he looks like.
- Now: a mountain of muscle, a shiny bald head tattooed with skulls, clubs and, oddly, the Cheshire Cat (
P1·Ch1). A black baseball cap with the green clover of Scotland's Celtic, tall army boots caked with dirt (P1·Ch1,P2·Ch3). A dark T-shirt, tattooed arms (P2·Ch3). According to Quinn: a "battlefield cross" tattoo, two "Service Stripes" and a unit insignia patch (P4·Ch3). After the arrest: a black eye and bruises (P4·Ch2).¶ 1 - In 2004, aged 22: still red-haired ("still-ginger hair"), an orange beard coming in (
CV·At War).¶ 1
His story, in order.
- Home before the army. A mum who snorts before she bursts out laughing. A veteran father with nightmares, who didn't want his son to go. Sisters Sophie (the youngest, soccer) and Amelia; a German Shepherd, Max. His last words to his father: "I'm not you, Dad. I can handle it." (
CV·At War,CV·Forsaken).¶ 1 - Iraq, 2004. A Platoon, a tent with seven bunks. Cards (Rank, Mow), smuggled Stella, a night of celebration after Garrison's platoon wins. A night ambush: everyone dies. Connor crawls out through the back flap of the tent in someone else's boots (
CV·At War). In the morning he goes back. Old Man Farny dies in his arms and gives him his Celtic cap: "Never stop fightin'." Connor carries his body along the road until he collapses at a checkpoint.¶ 2 - Betrayal, 2004. The infirmary. A man in a navy suit brings a "NOTICE OF LOSS": the bodies won't be recovered, there will be no investigation. Connor refuses to sign (
CV·Betrayal). This is where, by his own words inP1·Ch1, "they left me to gamble for jobs that were beneath me" begins.¶ 2 - 2005. He works in a grocery store and lives with his grandmother Felarie. Rain brings that night back; his temper has got worse (
CV·Forsaken). The manuscript breaks off here.¶ 2 - The empire. "It took me twenty years, but I did it" (
P1·Ch1). The "Connor Maguire Services" chain, a laundromat in Riverside, the casino under it, behind the casino a "den" of masked people with daggers instead of money. Above, an old mansion with a stained-glass butterfly window (P2·Ch2–Ch3).¶ 2 - Blackmail. "he's been blackmailing me. If I don't continue working with him he'll knock out more and more people!" (
P2·Ch3). From what Otto says, the blackmailer is Igor (P4·Ch1). The "market" on December 15th in the "den" (P2·Ch3).¶ 1 - Breakdown and arrest. After Sergio escapes, Connor goes after everyone who might be the runaway with a baseball bat (
P4·Ch1). He admits himself it was "a little overfetched" (CV·In Prison). He is arrested, and Ryan speaks of "all the innocent people he hurt on Sunday".¶ 2 - The cell. He recognises Sergio. He laughs until he cries at the shredder story. He trusts Sergio against his will: "Something in him reminded Connor of himself" (
CV·In Prison).¶ 1
What he wants. To win back his "honor" and get out, to save the December 15th market (CV·In Prison). To wear Farny's cap "everyday till I die". What hurts him. The word "selfish". His fallen comrades left without a burial. Rain (CV).¶ 4
⚠ / ?
- ⚠ Skin: "otherwise pale face" (
P1·Ch1) and "Connor's tan shade" (P4·Ch1).¶ 2 - ⚠ "I fought against my own men during the war in Iraq, and I was proud of it!" (
P1·Ch1), while in his own account (CV) he is the victim of an enemy ambush.¶ 1 - ⚠ Accent: "heavy Scottish accent" (
P4·Ch1); inCVhe speaks with a dropped "-in'" and supports the Boston Celtics, not the Scottish club. It was Farny who loved Scotland's Celtic.¶ 1 - ? "my wingman" (
P1·Ch1): (inference) most likely Lenny.¶ 1 - ? What happens between him and Arabella after the escape isn't said in
CVyet.¶ 1 - ⚠ When he sees Sergio at the station he says "Merlin…" (
P4·Ch2). Unclear whether it's a name or an exclamation.¶ 1
Arabella Lukshay
Who. Sergio's foster sister, the Lukshays' daughter. A model in the commercial for Connor's laundromat.¶ 2
What she looks like. Curled blonde hair, a doll-like, elfish face, enormous brown eyes, smoky eyeshadow. Black platform Uggs to the knee, fishnet tights "every day without fail", a tight black dress. A Gucci clutch that holds everything, even a ceramic mug. A cherry French manicure with painted black roses. A plaid grey-and-red mackinaw with the belt tied painfully tight. Blood-red lipstick, a bandana on her head (P2·Ch1–Ch2, P4·Ch1). A high, "breathy" voice, through her nose.¶ 2
Her story.
- Childhood. Greets six-year-old Sergio by screaming because he sat in "her" spot at breakfast. Blames broken glasses and missing dollars on him, puts spiders in his bed when he is 14, chases him singing "gingerbread man". Only pink will do (
P2·Ch1–Ch2,P4·Ch1–Ch2). Her parents never hit her; they simply ignored her: "another dusty trophy on their shelf" (P4·Ch1).¶ 2 - Now. She has fallen out with "Mommy and Daddy", and they've closed the purse. Her boyfriend Leondro left her for a Hollywood star (
P2·Ch2). She shoots a laundromat commercial, "really in it for the cool gambling room downstairs". She promises to pay the money back on December 15th: "My boss has a really big thing coming up" (P2·Ch1). She takes Sergio to the casino and leaves him at the dryer (P2·Ch2).¶ 2 - The turn. She defends Sergio to Otto: "He's my brother". She gets slapped (
P4·Ch1). She hits Otto with a chair. Under Andrew's questioning she stays silent. Andrew yells "Ouch!", and Sergio imagines she bit him (inference). She is slapped again and still holds her ground (P4·Ch1). She escapes with Sergio: "This is an awfully terrifying escape." After the escape they "parted quickly", and she disappears (P4·Ch2).¶ 4
⚠ / ? ? Where she is now, and whether Connor knows it was she who brought Sergio in. In CV he works it out himself: "Arabella." Who her "boss" is isn't said outright; (inference) Connor or his chain.¶ 4
Ana & Pablo Garcia (the parents)
- Ana. Black hair with a brown sheen, ends bleached blonde. A Roman nose, olive skin, dark brown eyes (green in the dream, and Sergio himself notices that it's "wrong"). The sweatshirt is hers, and so is the photo in the locket (
P2·Ch1). In the alley she is ready to go alone, as long as her son is spared (P4·Ch2).¶ 2 - Pablo. A sharp jawline, tan skin, short brown hair, a snake tattoo around his neck. Speaks Portuguese (
P2·Ch1). In the article he is "Governor Pablo Garcia" of a small Southern California town, whose policies had opponents (P4·Ch3). Gives himself up calmly, though his hands shake (P4·Ch2).¶ 1 - Fate. Taken on The Bandit's orders. Sergio believes they are alive (
P2·Ch1).¶ 1 - ⚠ Pablo's eyes are green or amber (see Sergio). ? A "Governor" of a town sounds odd, but that's what it says.¶ 2
The binderclips
Common to all: a black metal body, two metal handles; human arms, legs, face and hair appear and disappear. They live together as a "family" (P1·Ch2).¶ 3
Sunny
Who. The youngest and smallest. Percy's sister; he's her "Brother Percy" (P1·Ch1). What she looks like. Messy golden buns with one lock always coming loose. Over the journey the buns come apart into ponytails, then into a "tangle of branching hair" (P1, P3·Ch1). Her story.¶ 2
- She saves Reece from the Roomba and is first to volunteer as scout, but she's "too young" (
P1·Ch1).¶ 3 - She falls onto the shelf, makes friends with the lamp Bulb and with Remover, is frightened of the "doggy" and then defends him at once (
P1·Ch2). She insists on rescuing Reece when no one else cares. She takes offence: "Nobody notices me… I'm useless and helpless!" (P1·Ch2).¶ 3 - In the pocket she is the "eyes": she looks through the fabric and reports (
P3·Ch1). She's the first to understand: "Connor Maguire!"¶ 2 - The outburst (
P3·Ch2): she shouts at Percy that she alone holds the box together and all his exploits are lies. "LOOK AT ME WHEN I SPEAK!" Her own voice frightens her.¶ 1 - She finds the solution: the locket on its chain as a lift (
P3·Ch2–Ch3). Percy lets her open the handcuffs, and she bears the pain inside the lock (P3·Ch3).¶ 2 - Sergio tells her his whole life, and she advises him to "focus on smaller things" and keep "a catalog or database in your head" (
P4·Ch2). ⚠ Eyes: "green-amber" (P1·Ch1, first appearance), "sage" (P1·Ch1), "amber" (P1·Ch2,P3·Ch1), "green" (P1·Ch3), "amber-green" (P4·Ch2). Age: "I've only been alive for 26!" (P1·Ch3).¶ 6
Percy
Who. Sunny's big brother, a show-off. He "slayed" The Shredder, The Trash Can and "the wicked Stapler of West Virginia", none of it true (P1, P3·Ch2). What he looks like. Black headphones: he slides them onto his shoulders when he's angry and turns up the volume when he doesn't want to listen. Close-cropped dark hair, green-amber ("emerald") eyes. A blue sweater is mentioned once (P4·Ch1). He sits on a scrap of cardboard as a chair and holds it up as a shield (P1·Ch2). His story.¶ 5
- Lazy, snappy, afraid of the Dubaloms (
P1).¶ 2 - In the pocket he's nasty: "You're hopeless"; he calls Quinn a "nerd" (
P3).¶ 4 - The confession (
P3·Ch2): "I didn't even do half–not half, ANY–of that stuff… I'm a liar and a show-off." He admits Sunny is better than him. From here on he's a different clip.¶ 1 - He becomes the leader ("leader of the pack"), carries Maya off by force, then talks with her (
P3·Ch2–Ch3). He runs the locket operation. He sets Sergio his condition: "a real job in the police station" (P3·Ch3).¶ 2 - In
P4·Ch3his headphones are gone. ? Between him and Maya: she squeezes his shoulder, he blushes, they roll their eyes together (P3·Ch3). Not developed further.¶ 2
Maya and Ruth, the "Manipulative Twins"
Shared. Twins; Ruth is older by one second, and that is the heart of their quarrel. Narrow, dark, sly eyes. They lie in a cross, "mermaid-like", one on top of the other (P1·Ch1). They scare the others with Shredder stories, and Quinn debunks every one.¶ 1
- Ruth. Smooth dark-brown waves in a "slick" ponytail, a blue bow. "The Death Glare". Fake sobs, "drug dealer" theories (
P3·Ch1). She gets stuck under Sergio's hip, hence "WHY IS HIS HIP SO SHARP" (P3·Ch2). Her getting stuck sets off the whole locket operation. She proposes the break-in plan as a joke, and Sergio takes it seriously (P4·Ch2). She doesn't understand why her sister is drawing away from her (P4·Ch3).¶ 7 - Maya. Frizzy curls, side bangs, a pink bow. Next to Ruth, always "the second". The first cracks: in
P1·Ch3she can't roast Percy in front of Sunny, stares out of the window and dances the Macarena, "smiling for the first time in years". Without Ruth she falls apart (P3·Ch2), then tells Percy that since kindergarten Ruth has copied her: "it was like she's absorbing anything and everything that makes me, well, me" (P3·Ch3). She softens and jokes. InP4·Ch2her pink bow is gone. She explodes: "I'm just not your shadow anymore!", knocks over a glass and gives them all away to Ryan (P4·Ch3).¶ 5 - ⚠ Maya's hair colour: "dark brown hair erupted into curls" (
P1·Ch1), "frizzy light amber curls" (P1·Ch3), "rich hazelnut" (P3·Ch1), "hazel" (P3·Ch3). ? Whether Ruth gets a turn of her own, the text doesn't show yet.¶ 4
Quinn
Who. The brains of the family, their first leader. What she looks like. A lisp ("Thunny", "Reethe", "Dubalomth"), buck teeth. Glasses: "mini ruby lined spectacles", also "thick-lens square-framed". Pushing up her glasses means the argument is over. Thin, unevenly cut hair, as if "the barber who did it went cuckoo", like feathers (P1·Ch2, P3·Ch1, P4·Ch1). In her arms a bug encyclopedia, later the book "Lampshades of The World!", and a living toy phone with "ThatGPT" and "Oogle" (P1, P3). Her story.¶ 8
- She sends Reece to scout and comes up with the Dubalom chain (
P1). Secretly sad: "We're never gonna be normal paper clipth… We used to be useful" (P1·Ch2).¶ 2 - She climbs the cork board herself and hangs on to Frank the pin (
P1·Ch3).¶ 1 - She lies about a "desktop PHD" (
P3·Ch1). She wants to run without Ruth: "She's not worth our freedom!" (P3·Ch3).¶ 2 - She has been formally voted out; Percy is leader now (
P4·Ch2, Sunny's words). The Dubaloms have stopped following her and avoid her eyes (P4·Ch3). She gives the key hint about the database and reads Connor's tattoos (P4·Ch2–Ch3). ⚠ Hair "plain… choppy and thin" (P1·Ch2) and "bushy brown" (P1·Ch3). Glasses "ruby" and "square".¶ 4
The Dubaloms: Rodd, Modd, Todd
Who. The three biggest, strongest binderclips "in the whole cubicle", brothers, German speakers. "Rodd, Modd, and Todd at your zervice." Motto: "Einheit" ("Unity") (P1, P3). What they look like. Identical dumb white smiles with a chipped tooth, a military haircut, ramrod posture. Green camouflage jackets with name badges and "Dubalom" on the back (P1·Ch1, P4·Ch1). Their story. They are the muscle: they throw Reece out of the box, make a "couch" for Quinn, a bridge across the gap (P1). They fear the Shredder. Todd grows the most: he holds Maya back, comforts Sunny ("It vill all be fine"), turns Sunny inside the lock, "Mordsarbeit!" (P3·Ch2–Ch3). Modd secretly gives Rodd bunny ears (P3·Ch1). ⚠ Haircut "dark military cut" (P1·Ch1), and Todd's "blonde military cut" (P3·Ch1). In English "only Rodd" (P1), yet Todd later speaks in long English sentences (P3·Ch2).¶ 8
Reece
Who. The cowardly "expert" and scout. "I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIE!" His story. The Roomba runs over him, he's thrown out of the box as scout, Remover chases him, he falls off the shelf onto the desk (P1·Ch1–Ch2). The sticky notes find him soaked in the coffee mug and take him for "the ghoul of the mug". He is left there (P1·Ch3). ? A big gap: after P1·Ch3 Reece vanishes from the book. Sergio scoops up "just over half a dozen" binderclips, and Reece is, by the look of it, not among them. Where he is, the text doesn't say.¶ 5
Other living objects
| Who | Per the text | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Roomba | Robot vacuum. "Must eat, must have everything clean!" Breaks its programming to warn the binderclips about the law | P1·Ch1¶ 1 |

| Remover | A staple remover "like a dog". Clicks, licks, has a "Staples" label | P1·Ch2¶ 2 |
| Ed | MacBook "model 2", "Educational Device". One eye on the main camera, the other on the small webcam. Proud, at war with Siri, puts on the Macarena | P1·Ch3¶ 2 |

A blue pin roars, a yellow one cries, there's a purple one. The label under Connor is a chatterbox. A yellow pin falls together with a photo of a "large black figure" and the label "The Bandit" | P1·Ch3¶ 2 |
| Sticky notes, pencil, mug | The pencil giggles dumbly and waltzes; the sticky notes cannonball into the coffee | P1·Ch3¶ 2 |

People around Sergio
| Who | Per the text | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Inspector E. B. Ryan | Short, chubby, a screechy voice. Stands on his chair to look taller. A crimson watchband. In his office a shredder instead of a trash can, the passcode on a sticky note (09387). Fires Sergio, then puts him in the cell with Connor. To Connor he is "Bossy McShortypants" | P1·Ch1, P2·Ch3, P4·Ch2–Ch3, CV¶ 1 |
| Superintendent Wyatt Smith | Was an Inspector, now "Private Detective" with his own suite. Muscular. Sergio's mentor, gave him the revolver. Ryan says Smith is "turning a blind eye" to the casino | P1·Ch1–Ch2, P2·Ch1, P4·Ch2¶ 2 |
| General Maverick Nolan | Greasy black hair, a curled lip. Has disliked Sergio since college | P2·Ch1¶ 1 |

| Valerie Aurelio ("Val", now "Valerie") | Worked the station's files, side by side with Sergio. Fired for tampering with evidence to help her father, owner of Alorex, who faced 5 years for fraud and got 2. Glossy dark hair just past her shoulders, cat-eye glasses, purple lipstick, a black dress, a leather blazer, a fanny pack. Tense on the train, a "lightning-fast recognition" | P4·Ch2¶ 4 |
| Chief Inspector Vance | Kind crinkles around his eyes. His father was killed in the army, his mother had dissociative amnesia. Questioned five-year-old Sergio and investigated Igor | P4·Ch3¶ 2 |

| Edmund ("Polo Neck") | Lookout outside the laundromat: sunglasses, black jeans, a grey polo neck, a black jacket, a cigarette. Polite and bored. Recognised Sergio | P2·Ch2–Ch3, P4·Ch1¶ 3 |
| Grecs | Skin "a sickly greyish-peach, like a zombie's", startling blue eyes, wiry blonde hair, a black leather jacket, Ray-Bans with a red comms light. Knocked Sergio out, poured the whisky into him | P3·Ch2¶ 2 |
| Ruby | A woman, "cruel", calls Connor "Master". Cut off at "Will the market contain th-" | P2·Ch3¶ 2 |
| Otto | Balding, red-faced. Hits Arabella. "Then he's one of Igor's men!" | P4·Ch1¶ 1 |
| Andrew, Bill, Derek, Avery | Andrew, a long-haired blond man, questions and hits Arabella. Derek, a dark-haired guard. Avery, a nervous woman. Bill sends Avery to the "den" | P4·Ch1¶ 3 |
| The chase | A big bearded man with a red face, a woman with magenta hair, a man with a buzz cut, a bald olive-skinned man | P4·Ch1¶ 2 |
| Kwame | Like "Eddie Valiant's stunt double": a beige trench coat, a thin dark face, a black afro under an Irish kepi hat, Ray-Bans, startling blue eyes, a chipped tooth. Shuffles cards non-stop. British speech ("Oi lad", "youse"). Despises the gambling "dim-witts". ? Whose side he's on isn't said | P2·Ch3, P4·Ch1¶ 2 |
| The man in red socks | Brown loafers, bright red socks with a hole, light skin, an American voice. Names the next victim: Anne-Marie Kellington, Maple Street. ? Who he works for | P4·Ch1¶ 1 |
| Igor Gondalaz (alias Mar Frong) | "Convenience Store Raider". In the Pyrenees he stole exactly half of everything that came in pairs from Señor Rivera. His €50,000 bail was paid by an unknown source, then he flew to California. Blackmails Connor (inference from Otto's words) | P4·Ch1, P4·Ch3¶ 1 |
| The Bandit | Faceless, "with so many names they were impossible to count". Ordered the Garcias' kidnapping. Sighted in Springfield. His photo hangs on Sergio's board. The man with the croaky voice in the alley worked for him | P2·Ch1, P4·Ch2¶ 1 |
A Platoon and Connor's family (only in Connor's View)
| Who | Per the text |
|---|---|

| Marcus | Long dark hair, a bragger, loves horseplay, wins at cards¶ 2 |
| Teri | A newsboy cap, wakes everyone by clapping their faces, teases Charles¶ 1 |
| James | A radio from home, top bunk. Shot in the back. Connor takes his radio¶ 2 |

| Geremiah (once spelled "Germiah") | Makes up the rules and penalties in Mow¶ 2 |
| Old Man Farny | 36, limps from an old wound, Scotland's Celtic cap. Argues "Keltic" vs "Seltic". Dies with the words "Never stop fightin'"¶ 2 |

| The man in the navy suit | Brings the "NOTICE OF LOSS"¶ 1 |
| The young woman in uniform in the infirmary | Olive skin, dark hair, about Laker's age. Pushes Connor back into bed by force¶ 2 |
| Grandma Felarie | In her eighties, martial arts five days a week, a fierce grey bun. Loves expensive things and names objects: the cabinet "Zed", the umbrella "Frida", the paper towels "Franks". Cat Cici, ginger¶ 2 |
| Mum, Dad, Sophie, Amelia, Max | See Connor¶ 2 |
⚠ in Connor's View: Farny, Geremiah and Charles go out on patrol, yet in the morning Charles and Geremiah lie dead in the tent. There are slips into the third person ("his comrades", CV·Betrayal). The cell scene breaks after "Sergio clenched his teeth,": what follows is a piece of a conversation that isn't in the text ("Igor took away your parents…"). The manuscript ends on "Forsaken, 2005", on the word "As".¶ 6
